On an inflatable product, printing is a durability decision as much as a visual one.

How silk screen printing works

Silk screen printing pushes ink through a fine mesh stencil onto the substrate with a squeegee. Each color requires its own screen, and the ink is laid down in a relatively thick film before curing.

Strengths:

Durability under real abuse.

  • The thicker ink film bonds into the PVC or TPU surface and resists abrasion, folding, UV exposure, and salt water — exactly the conditions inflatable products face season after season.

Consistent, opaque color.

  • Even on dark or colored substrates, screen inks hold their tone, and Pantone-matched colors stay uniform across an entire production run.

Cost efficiency at scale.

  • Once screens are made, per-unit cost drops sharply, making silk screen printing the economical choice for high-volume standard branding.

Limitations:

Setup cost and lead time.

  • Every color needs its own screen, so tooling is more expensive and slower for new designs.

Limited detail.

  • Fine gradients and photographic effects are difficult; the process favors bold logos, solid colors, and clean typography.

How UV printing works

UV printing is a digital inkjet process. Printheads deposit tiny ink droplets that cure instantly under UV light, and the artwork lives as a digital file — no screens, no tooling.

Strengths:

Extreme flexibility.

  • Changing a design is as fast as updating a file, which makes UV printing ideal for short runs, samples, prototypes, and personalized or one-off projects.

Full-color capability.

  • Gradients, photorealistic imagery, and fine detail print at high resolution.

Fast turnaround.

  • New artwork can move from file to finished part in days rather than weeks.

Limitations:

Thinner ink film.

  • Digital ink layers are generally thinner than screen-printed films, which can reduce long-term abrasion resistance on high-wear surfaces.

Flexing is the enemy.

  • Inflatable products are folded, deflated, dragged, and bounced on. Unless ink adhesion is engineered for the specific PVC or TPU blend, UV-printed graphics risk cracking or peeling along fold lines.

Higher cost at volume.

  • Without the scale advantage of screen tooling, per-unit cost stays higher for large production runs.

Dark substrates need white ink layers
